The sun was dazzlingly warm and the air springlike Saturday -- perfect weather for Viking ships to race near the Bridge of Lions. The prows of the ships -- Solkyst, Tor, Falken and Hagar -- were decorated respectively with a white dragon with a curling red smile; a hook; a surprised looking bird and a green dragon exuding either flames or a long, red tongue. All four ships were manned by crews from all over Florida, rowing against each other for little more than bragging rights and a good laugh.

The Brown women's crew began their spring dual race season in impressive fashion on Saturday morning, sweeping the URI women on the Seekonk River. The varsity 8 turned in the fastest race of the day, rowing a 6:50.59 to knock off the Rams by 16 seconds, but all six Brown boats appeared to already be in midseason form. The day began with the third varsity eights, as the Bears set the tone early with an impressive 7:17.60, despite rowing against the incoming tide.

The banks of Bear Creek will see the last of winter out with a splash. On Saturday, March 27, in Robbins, the annual Charles E. Brady Memorial Paddle is coupled this year with a picnic, along with instruction for anybody who has never paddled before. It gets under way as usual when runners from Bear Creek's headwaters race into town bringing along a jug of fresh water, sometimes called Adam's Ale. Water is said to have been the only ale Adam had to drink, as beer had not yet been invented.

A 22-year-old American rower completed a solo journey across the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday, touching a pier in the coffee-brown waters of Guyana to claim a record as the youngest person to accomplish the feat. Katie Spotz, who spent more than two months alone at sea, hugged her father and brother as 200 people cheered her arrival in this South American capital. "The hardest part was just the solo part," Spotz said, saying she struggled with boredom and had trouble sleeping inside the cramped, 19-foot (
